It is time to start to prepare potatoes to get an early and very generous harvest. As spring approaches, gardeners carry out preparatory work that allows them to increase the yield of vegetables and accelerate the ripening process of the first fruits.

In mid-March, potatoes are usually taken out of the cellar for preliminary germination. Sprouted potatoes planted in the ground will allow you to enjoy young tubers two weeks ahead of schedule.

Sprouting potatoes

When starting to sprout potatoes, you should focus on the climatic conditions in which you live. In the southern regions, planting material is removed from the basement earlier than in the northern regions. It must be taken into account that only after a month or a month and a half are the sprouted potatoes ready for planting in open ground. By that time, the tubers will have warmed up sufficiently, gained strength, and formed shoots at least 3 cm long.

Sprouted potatoes are planted in the beds when the soil warms up to +7 degrees. It is carefully lowered into the hole and covered with earth so as not to damage the fragile shoots. The air temperature at that time should not fall below +8. Under such favorable conditions, potato sprouts will continue to actively develop in the hole and acquire stolons, on which young tubers will then form.

Preparing for landing

It happens that potatoes begin to sprout right in the cellar. This happens when it is too warm. Sprouted potatoes may contain solanine, which is harmful to our health, so eating them is not recommended. It’s better to plant tubers with sprouts in the ground.

Seed potatoes need to be taken out of the cellar, sorted, and distributed by variety. Sluggish and rotten tubers should be thrown away. Also, you should not choose to plant specimens with a small number of buds, that is, “eyes”. If there are few varietal potatoes, then large tubers can be cut into two or even four parts. You just need to make sure that there are buds left on each of them.

It is recommended to place the selected planting material in boxes. It is advisable to fill them up to half so that the sprouts are less damaged in the future. The boxes should be placed in a room where they will be kept at room temperature. They need to be covered with an old blanket or other thick fabric on top. If potatoes are germinated in dense boxes, then the tubers can be sprinkled with wet sawdust or sand.

Sprouted potatoes need additional sorting. When the shoots become visible, the tubers need to be carefully sorted. Potatoes with frail shoots are discarded because they are not suitable for planting: thin sprouts will not grow into high-quality bushes. The boxes are then covered again and put back in place.

Some summer residents recommend germinating potatoes in cardboard egg trays. To do this, the tubers need to be arranged into cells so that the shoots grow in the right direction. But you can only bother like this if you plan to plant no more than two buckets. Owners of large gardens heat and germinate potatoes directly in bags. They allocate less time for this, and then the shoots will be short and will not break off during transportation and planting.

Experienced farmers begin preparing planting material in the fall. To do this, they dry the seed potatoes in the sun and let them “tan” a little until they turn greenish. In this way, the tubers are hardened, and toxic substances are produced inside, which “spoil the appetite” of various pests. This procedure can be done in the spring. Remember that these potatoes cannot be eaten!
